The human body is highly sophisticated and complex. It is both resilient and vulnerable. Stress is metabolised in the body and can lead to chronic health conditions. Research in gut health (microbiome diversity), neuroscience and epigenetics (the study of the interaction between our genes and environment) shows gut health has a direct impact on mood, mental health, disease and sleep. The cliché, ‘you are what you eat‘, describes the impact of what we eat on physical and mental health. Research reveals certain foods exacerbate inflammatory conditions and impact mood. Communication between the brain and the gut via the vagus nerve is key to the mind-body connection. The vagus nerve is involved in multiple functions in the body, including the parasympathetic nervous system and digestion.
Serotonin is the key hormone in stabilising mood, feelings of well-being and happiness. This hormone impacts the entire body. It enables brain cells and other nervous system cells to communicate with each other. Serotonin is involved with sleeping, eating and digestion. Ninety percent (90%) of serotonin, which helps produce melatonin (the sleep hormone), is located in the gut. The gut produces 400 times more melatonin than the brain. Making sure our gut is healthy and able to produce the melatonin required is fundamental, particularly when we are under a lot of stress.
“Sleep Hygiene” describes behavioural and environmental factors that precede sleep. Practicing simple strategies assists in achieving more restful and restorative sleep, promotes daytime alertness and helps treat or avoid sleep disorders and consequent mental and physical health conditions. A diet that includes food groups that create a healthy gut environment and assist in helping the body to manage stress is a simple and practical approach to maintaining health and wellbeing.
This training is not medical advice. It will explore physical, emotional and mental wellbeing through learning the language of your genes, brain and gut.
