Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again"
- Nelson Mandela
Resilience describes an individual’s, community’s or country’s ability to ‘bounce back’ from difficult experiences. Resilience has been defined as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress, such as family and relationship issues, serious health problems, workplace and financial stressors and events impacting whole communities or countries.
A lesser known term is ‘antifragility’. Antifragility is defined as “… beyond resilience or robustness. The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better.” The term antifragility may be misconstrued as a judgement. It lends itself to the suggestion a person is deficient in some way rather than the focus being on an event or experience that was out of the normal range of experiences and overwhelming.
Dr. Brené Brown talks about having the courage to be open to, and to embrace our vulnerability and the strength that emerges when we do so. In the psychological trauma field, antifragility is described as ‘post-traumatic growth’. Post-traumatic growth recognises the deep crisis, grief and loss that can arise from traumatic experiences but that with supports and time people may transform and emerge stronger or develop new skills and confidence in themselves.
Resilience is not a quota we are born with, good luck or good genes. It is an interweaving of personal characteristics, support networks and the ability to access systems and structures that support individuals and communities. By promoting the foundations of resilience, we enhance and build psychological capabilities and strategies or helpful defenses against stress.
Antifragility or post-traumatic growth, encourages us that challenging and adverse experiences may overwhelm us for an indefinite period, impacting our lives in ways we could not have imagined but these experiences do not have to define us. We can grow with and around the ‘broken places’, strength that is revealed and nurtured in vulnerability through trauma.
Naomi will design a training to suit the needs of your organisation, exploring resilience and post-traumatic growth, and how to thrive in your personal and professional lives.
Participants will be able to:
Delphi Training and Consulting acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands and waters which we share. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and future. We acknowledge and recognise it is the oldest living culture in the world and that sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
Delphi is an inclusive and safe organisation. We respect, celebrate and support diversity, the inclusion of children, young people and adults from LGBTQIA+ communities, people with disabilities, people from CALD backgrounds and people with diverse religious beliefs or affiliations.
